Xiaomi MI 5 Review : insanely fast?
In recent year of time Xiaomi had become one of the major players in smart phone market specially in Asian countries and taking on other trusted brands like Samsung,Apple. Xiaomi entered India with around 2 years ago with launch of Xiaomi mi 3 which was one of the best performer which can be bought at a cheap price and so for 2k16 their next flagship the Xiaomi mi 5 which was announced at the mobile world congress 2016 had finally made its way to India .would the insanely fast tag line suits the device and could this flagship can compete and be on top of others ?. All the questions would be answered in our review of Xiaomi mi 5.
Xiaomi MI 5 Design
The Xiaomi Mi 5 have taken inspiration from the Mi Note but this time it is more refined to make it more beautiful and comfortable to hold . Starting from the materials used the Xiaomi Mi 5 have metal unibody design with the steel frame sandwich between the front and back glass just like Samsung galaxy S7 .
the front is well protected by the Gorilla Glass 4 and the back is what Xiaomi say Premium 3D glass which is also protected with gorilla glass 4 there is also a premium variant which comes with ceramic textured back, the backing curved at the edges to blend seamlessly into a metal frame which makes it comfortable to hold .
Overall all we like to design of the Xiaomi Mi 5 and its even one of the best looking device you can get so very well done in the design section.well this is all for the standard edition
The Premium edition comes with ceramic backing which is more premium according to Xiaomi also with such a big battery and ceramic backing Xiaomi has still been able to make this device light i.e just 124 grams which we must is pretty serious.
Xiaomi MI 5 Display
The Xiaomi Mi 5 comes with a 5.15 inch of screen size and with an resolution of 1920 X 1080 giving out pixel density of 428 ppi. Well as the competition is increasing we have seen a big increase in resolution as the 4k resolution of display panel are the highest that we can get,but 1080 p is still a standard level for a flagship level device until it meets all the demands of the user so we praise the choice a 1080 p display panel.
But aside a standard display resolution there is another side of the story there are many hardware as well as software enhancement that made the display panel on the Xiaomi Mi 5 like the sunlight display which is a hardware feature ,night mode and reading mode also. But also according to Xiaomi the Mi 5 display has 16 led lights working behind to lit the display providing it 600 nits of brightness so the display can easily be seen under direct sunlight and 95% of NTSC color gamut accuracy .Overall the display on the Xiaomi Mi 5 is one of the best for the price you are going to buy the device.
Xiaomi MI 5 Hardware and Performance
under hood we get to see the snapdragon 820 and for the highest edition the two cores are cloaked at 2.15 Ghz and other two at 1.6 Ghz and all the four cores are kryo Cpu and for the low tier variant we get two cores cloaked at 1.8 Ghz and other two similar 1.6 Ghz . For multitasking we are getting 3 GB ram for lower end with 32/64 gb of internal storage and 4 Gb of ram with 128 Gb of internal storage , as there is no support of micro-Sd card Xiaomi choice to go with base storage of 32 is appreciated . For playing games you will not face any issues as with Qualcomm in-house GPU the Adreno 530 the gaming would be a breeze.
On the connectivity side we are getting 4G also the VoLTE support and this time NFC is also supported but also all types of NFC profiles are supported so ease of mobile payment could be easier . For standby we are getting a 3000 Mah of battery under the hood which the company claims to easily last a day.The device supports Qualcomm Quick charge 3.0 which is done through a USB-Type C port.
Xiaomi MI 5 Camera
Xiaomi always done a decent job in the camera segment for their flagship as well as the budget devices . This time also Xiaomi is not lacking behind we are getting a 16 MP shooter with Sony Exmor IMX298 sensor and with PDAF autofocus, also Xiaomi introduced that the camera has used the DTI technology found in the iPhone 6 and up series of devices .Overall camera quality is quite good but we must say it’s not the best as compared to other like Samsung galaxy S7 . The camera take good pictures under direct sunlight or daylight but in indoors it does a decent job the only small dip it takes on the low light situations it still gets the job done well .
In the video recording side we are getting option to record videos at 4k also it is the first one to support 4 – axis optical image stabilisation which means it can easily stabilize shaky images. For the front camera we are getting the same solution that HTC did a 4 MP camera with large pixel size of 2µ pixels meaning good low light image capturing and for our first testing the results are good.
the CameraUI is pretty straight forward like that you have noticed on iPhone swipe left to open live filter swipe right to select from tons of camera modes.and for the front beatification mode is on by default .
Xiaomi MI 5 Software
Software is the front end side of the product which may or may not let down the product. Starting from the basic the Xiaomi Mi 5 is the first mi device that comes with MIUI 7 based on android 6.0 marshmallow .
Now for MIUI 7 it depends upon your choice how you like it yours by design but we must say the software has many bugs it have poor ram management as the skin itself is very heavy and so be carefull if you are a hardcore user you may buy ending 4GB variant. Overall MIUI have ton of software features and we like them too also Mi is Quite serious in providing bug fixes as well as monthly security patches as soon as possible which is a plus point so it depends upon your choice .
Xiaomi MI 5 Pricing
As for the pricing, the phone starts at 1999 ($306) i.e 20500 RS for the 3GB + 32 GB version (Glass Body + Snapdragon 820 cloaked at 1.8 GHz), 2299 Yuan ($352) i.e 25,000 Rs for 3GB + 64 GB (Ceramic body + faster clocked Snapdragon 820 cloaked at 2.15 GHz) and goes up to 2699 Yuan ($413) i.e 28,000 rs for the high-end 4 GB + 128 GB variant (Ceramic body + Snapdragon 820 cloaked at 2.15 GHz). These are some pretty aggressive pricing for a flagship device its sad to say that the product is restricted to some markets only like India and China and yet there is not any plan for the launch of this device in U.S.A.
